Take my love, take my land, take me where I cannot stand..... I don't care, I'm still free, you can't take the sky from me.
Take me out, to the black, tell em I ain't coming back..... Burn the land and boil the sea, you can't take the sky from me.

The Mars Initiative: A Public Fund for a Human Mission to Mars

Post by Sam Fraser » Sat Jan 05, 2013 6:47 pm

The Mars Initiative (TMI) is a publicly funded and ambitious project, which aims to send humans to Mars and establish a human settlement on that planet.

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/3 ... z2H7oH9gUG

The Mars Initiative was created to provide YOU with the opportunity to participate in one of the most historic events in our history - sending humans to Mars and establishing a human settlement.... By utilizing the combined strength of the web, social media, and automated software technology, we have developed a unique and revolutionary organization!

http://www.marsinitiative.org/

Noteworthy not for their destination, just their approach. For example, in their strategic plan (PDF), they state "TMI is a crowdsourcing model" as well as a 501(c)(3) organization.

Was browsing hack a day and came across this article: http://hackaday.com/2012/12/29/engadget ... d-funding/
which brought me to here: http://www.engadget.com/2012/12/28/subm ... gers-open/
If you fellas have the rover working yet you might consider submitting it to them as a potential marketable product.

Our Future in Space - A National Space Society Video

Post by Sam Fraser » Thu Jan 24, 2013 4:01 am

The National Space Society (NSS) wants to give you a truly inspiring and informative look at the future of space development.

The resources in space are critical to humanity's future.... The knowledge and wealth generated from our expansion into space will trigger an economic and scientific renaissance. This will be the next great technological and industrial revolution.

Our Kickstarter Project will create a high quality video presentation that shows why space exploration and development are needed, how they will greatly benefit us all, and why the time to get involved is right now.

We've gathered a truly stellar team of creative experts who have agreed to bring our video to life, but first we need your support to make it happen.

While we’ve intentionally kept our goal for this Kickstarter project at a modest $35,000, we hope to raise more than that.

Well, congratulations to the NSS for raising 164% of their goal, or $57,571 in total. One of the backers, Near Earth LLC, has also supported other space crowdfunding efforts. Near Earth has helped fund NanoRacks, which is enabling low-cost "plug-and-play" microgravity research aboard the International Space Station.

Crowdfunding space

In the last year a number of companies and organizations have used Kickstarter and similar sites to raise modest amounts of money—only occasionally exceeding $100,000—needed for early stage development... unlike raising money from angel investors or other more traditional sources, crowdfunders don’t get an equity stake in the company, just access to a product, a gift, or even a feel-good sense of having supported a worthy cause.

There’s also no guarantee of success. Golden Spike, the company that announced plans in December for commercial human lunar missions... established a campaign on another crowdfunding site, Indiegogo, seeking to raise $240,000 to support outreach and design work. As of early Monday, with ten days left in the effort, Golden Spike has raised only about five percent of that goal.
