Notably, having travelled to Japan in 1998, I was surprised to find that the internet is not very popular in Japan in contrast to the USA and many other countries. Home PC's are also not nearly as common in Japan, either, and I had an extremely difficult time finding an internet cafe, finally having to go into the Tokyo Western embassy and foreigner hangout area. The lack of English was also shocking for such a highly developed country.
