Mining the Moon: Golden Spike Company Lunar Human Project?
There are rumors of an upcoming lunar mining company announcement, possibly as early as December 2012, by the startup Golden Spike Company, which would establish a human colony on the Moon for resources extraction, designed by well established aerospace industry engineers, and backed by wealthy people including foreign investors, using American systems.
There are countless plans for commercial lunar bases to make products and infrastructure which have been proposed by established engineers over the years which went nowhere, many long gone into obscurity. For this reason, there was little reaction to mention of "Golden Spike" as one of the concepts for a human Moon mission on Space Calendar in May, 2012, which did not mentioning any financial backing.
The Golden Spike Company started receiving more attention after an article on November 15, 2012, by NasaSpaceFlight.com on a commercial lunar base which mentions major funding (more than halfway down that article), ending on the possible December announcement. This article starts with discussions of propellant depots, construction of bases, and other infrastructure for the Moon as the context for such a venture. The forum on this website has a lot of discussion as a result, albeit diffuse regarding specifics on Golden Spike and its plans.
A followup on November 17 by NewSpaceWatch.com digs deeper into the Colorado company led by Alan Stern with a domain name owned by lawyer and space advocate Doug Griffith, though the site is parked as of the time of this writing.
Let's hope to hear about a lunar mining venture using a human base with some big money soon.
